Super thin OLED TV hits the market

Sony has begun selling the first mass-produced flat-panel OLED TV in Japan, the XEL-1. Retailing at 200,000 yen (almost $1,800), the super thin display about one-eighth of an inch thick.

OLEDs (Organic light-emitting diodes), which improve on the bulky backlighting of LCD displays are a relatively new innovation in screen technology. They work by using thin films of organic molecules that create light with the application of electricity. Their display is much brighter and crisper then LCD’s and they can be viewed from all angles without changes in picture quality.

Anaylst at DisplaySearch Paul Gagnon says “There’s speculation that beyond 2015, OLEDs could advance to become a creditable threat to the LCD flat-panel business”

We’ll wait and see.
